Who is MC?
Mike's musical world began at age six in Vienna, Virginia, when he started learning how to play the piano, studying classical music for seven years. Shortly after he discovered his true voice on the electric bass, and started getting his feet wet playing in local Northern VA bands. He went on to earn a Business degree from Radford University, while continuing to perform all over the Southeast. After college, Mike developed a passion for audio production, interning at Sound of Music Recording in Richmond, VA, & soon after relocated to San Diego, CA, where he interned at Studio West (formerly Signature Sound).
Spending lots of time in the studio allowed him to meet many great musicians and he soon began playing bass full time in the SoCal music scene. Shortly after, Mike met San Diego Berklee College of Music alum/fretless bass virtuoso, David Hilton, with whom he studied jazz for two years. David encouraged Mike to apply to Berklee, and after auditioning and earning a Berklee Achievement Scholarship, he enrolled to study electric and acoustic bass performance, a life-long dream. Mike graduated with honors and a Performance degree, and had the pleasure of learning from many amazing teachers, including Bruce Gertz, Lincoln Goines, Oscar Stagnaro, Ed Tomassi, Victor Mendoza, Jim Stinnett, John Funkhouser, Dave Clark & Brazilian artist-in-residence, Filó Machado, in styles ranging from jazz, Latin (Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, Caribbean), funk, R&B/soul, rock/pop, etc...
After graduation, Mike moved to New York City, another life-long dream, and stayed busy touring the country with NYC rock band Turbine, international shows/recordings with singer/songwriter Lipbone Reading, up-and-coming NYC pop/rock band Lead of Foxes, & various bands/artists. In 2014 Mike made the jump back to the West Coast, and now resides in LA, where he serves as President of Vanntastic Productions, a full-service music production company. He has also been busy touring Europe with Brian Auger's Oblivion Express featuring Alex Ligertwood (Santana) and Jim Mullen (Average White Band, Kokomo), touring the U.S. with The English Beat and The Walcotts, even a couple of jams with Stevie Wonder (!!), while maintaining a steady recording schedule. Other interests & tastes include surfing, studying languages, enjoying spicy ethnic foods, & collecting classic vinyl.
